Veterans Day Tribute
As our nation celebrates Veterans Day, we directly encourage our network of supporters to include African-American patriots’, often-forgotten sacrifices and contributions. Such heroes include the USS Mason men, who made history during World War II as the first ship crewed by a predominantly black crew. At the time, racial segregation remained the rule in the U.S. armed forces as well as much of the country. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black Military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps, a precursor of the U.S. Air Force. The 92nd Infantry Division, better known as the Buffalo Soldiers, was the only Black segregated unit to see combat during the Italian campaign, whose bravery earned them 24 Medals of Honor. The courage and commitment of these men and women who fought for freedom abroad that they were not afforded at home. African American veterans have fought in every war and conflict in our nation’s history and we honor them with the brave women and men who have served our nation.
